A landmark event in industrial archeology and sustainable forestry is unfolding in San Benito County. The decommissioning of 137 massive redwood tanks at the Alba Coast Winery has officially been recognized as the largest single-site redwood tank removal project in recorded history.
This monumental operation is being led by Project Managers Michael Johnson, owner of the Aqua Tech Company, and Zachary Yates. Together, Johnson and Yates are overseeing the surgical dismantling and logistical management of over 4 million gallons of historical wine storage capacity.
The scale of the salvage is unprecedented:
The Resource: Approximately 600,000 board feet of rare, old-growth "Clear All Heart" redwood.
The Ownership: The rights to this historic lumber are held by Pacific Reclaimed Lumber and Supply.
Environmental Impact: Reclaiming these tanks sequesters nearly 1.8 million pounds of CO2.
"This project at Alba Coast Winery represents a once-in-a-lifetime harvest. Our mission is to ensure every stave of this 100-year-old wood is preserved with the dignity its history deserves." — Michael Johnson, Owner of Aqua Tech Company
